MQ12 - the clever solution!

November 22, 2005

The M12 standard is currently the predominant standard as far as sensor and actuator wiring is concerned in the machine installation area. Normally the plug is screwed to the sensor/actuator. However, a knurled screw with an integrated spanner flat that speeds up installation using tried and tested knurling has been available from Murrelektronik for several years. This screw can also be tightened using a torque wrench, even in situations where space is limited.

Sensor/actuator cable installation time plays a major part in systems that contain a large number of sensors and actuators in areas such as warehousing technology, conveyor technology, installation technology and packing technology. There are now many different M12 systems with snap-in connectors on the market. However, these systems have an important disadvantage.

Murrelektronik has paid more attention to market requirements. The product manager of a well-known sensor manufacturer said the following: “If someone comes onto the market with a snap-in connector system that does not require changes to the sensor, can have a simple M12 plug fitted to it and is compatible with existing systems, and they provide this at the same price – then we would be interested”.

This requirement describes exactly what the problem is. Only a system that fits exactly onto the previously used sensors and actuators can assert itself in practice. Consider the fact that the spare part situation alone is extremely difficult for system operators who use machines with and without snap-in connector systems. Two versions of every sensor have to be stocked and/or connected using expensive adapters. Sensor manufacturers that suddenly have to support three of four different manufacturer - independent connecting systems also have a problem with the current situation.

Murrelektronik has complied with this market requirement and is providing the first solution to come onto the market: MQ12 – the clever solution! The prime objective during development was being able to use standard sensors without sensor manufacturers having to make changes.

Information concerning the protection class, the shock and vibration resistance and not least the price stability of the MQ12 compared to the previous M12 plug-in connector was added to the specification. The MQ12 connector complies with protection class IP67 in accordance with DIN 60529. DIN EN 60068-2-27 and DIN EN 60068-2-6 were used as the standard during shock and vibration testing and were complied with.

However, the way that it works is simply but brilliant. The connector is placed onto the sensor – meaning that the flat gasket in the MQ12 immediately takes effect and seals off the connector. Now the connector is mechanically fixed to the thread by turning the locking mechanism clockwise by 1/4 turn, and an optical indicator shows that the connector is locked.

The installation time for a sensor cable is reduced by up to 90% with the MQ12. The new MQ12 meets all customer and market requirements. It is compatible with existing systems, easy and quick to install and price-neutral with the existing M12 program. As of November 2005, the MQ12 will be available in female straight, female 90° and female 90° with LED versions. The available cable types are PVC and PUR / halogen-free in yellow and black. As one of the leading manufacturers in the field of installation systems for machinery and systems, Murrelektronik has again proven its high degree of innovation with the MQ12 and produced a user-friendly solution.
